Is this audition worth my time? Part 2: P2P Edition

Auditions, Casting, Social Media

Previously, I posted about auditions I get from my agents and if they are worth my time based on a few factors. I promised to follow up with a part 2 for P2P sights. I’m a member of Voice123, so all the data I’m talking about here is available on there site. Other P2P’s may differ. Is this P2P audition worth my time?  Here’s what I found:

Data and more data

One nice thing about P2P’s, in this case Voice123, is they give you data and more data. Data on how many auditions are being requested and how many voice actors have already submitted on for this job. This is extremely helpful in deciding is this audition is worth my time. If the job is asking for fifty submissions and forty-nine voice actors have already submitted, I tend to pass those over, unless its a type of project that I book a lot. Why not? All this is info I can only guess about when I get an audition from my agent. Say what you want about other aspects of P2P’s, but having this data at my fingertips is an improvement in world of Voiceover auditions.

Still more data

Maybe you’re like me and you want still more data. Voice123 does just that by keeping track of all my submissions. I can view the original proposal, allowing me to listen back to the custom audition I read, see the rate I quoted and the note I wrote to the client. I like this feature because it’s a great way to see how I’m doing and evaluate my progress over time. The best part of this archive is it show’s me if the client actually reviewed my proposal. It’s cold comfort if I didn’t book the job, but at least it’s more satisfying that throwing it all into the void and never hearing back. Is this audition worth my time? Part 2: P2P edition was a good exercise because it forced me to evaluate my performance.

Sometimes a lot is too much

Having a lot of data can be useful in deciding if this audition is worth my time, but sometimes a lot is too much. I try not to let the data be the final arbiter as to what I decide to audition for. If it’s a commercial style that I’m great at, then I’ll submit an audition if the client is still accepting them, even if they already have enough submissions. Recently I heard back from a client who already booked another talent but took the time to compliment me on my read. Now that’s some useful data.
